What Do Birds Eat? 4 Common Favorites

Do you want to attract some lovely birds to your patio or backyard? If you’re a fan of bird watching, then you may wonder, “what do birds eat?” It’s important to answer this question, if you want to attract certain fowl to the feeders. Here are some of the most common foods that birds love.

1. Berries.
While not as popular as other types of foods for birds, certain types of fowl enjoy nibbling on berries. Popular berries among birds include blackberries, cotoneaster (seeds), holly berries, and shrub berries. Which winged animals eat berries? The list includes various Parakeets, Parrots, Peacocks, Quail, and (wild) Turkeys.

2. Fruits.
Believe it or not, birds enjoy apples, bananas, and pears, too! Fowl that enjoy these large fruits include blackbirds, robins, and starlings. You could cut up these fruits into tiny bird-size pieces to make it easier for the birds to consume them.

3. Millet.
This word actually refers to various grasses that bear tiny, round seeds. It’s these seeds that you can use to fill birdfeeders. Millet contains a high amount of protein and many types of vitamins. It originated in Africa, though farmers grow copious amounts in various parts of the world. Which species of birds enjoy munching on millet? They include various Blackbirds, Buntings, Finches, Longspurs, Redpolls, Sparrows, and Tanagers.

4. Sunflower Seeds.
Before filling up bird feeders, you might ask the question: “What do birds eat?” If you want to attract winged creatures during bird watching, then consider sunflower seeds. They’re inexpensive and bursting with energy. You should certainly consider the various forms of sunflower seeds. They include black sunflower seeds that contain their husks, sunflower hearts that lack their husks, and seed mixtures that include sunflower seeds. Birds that consume sunflower seeds include various types of Chickadees, Grackles, Jays, Magpies, Nuthatches, Pigeons, Sparrows, Thrashers, Titmice, and Woodpeckers.
