Everything seems a little more exotic in the Western USA and Canada – and that includes the birds that call the region home. Here are some sensational western bird species to look for when watching birds in that region.
1. Acorn Woodpecker
This bird spends several hours storing acorns in holes located in trees and telephone poles. The chest and back of the woodpeckers are black and white, while the head includes the hues white, black, and red.
2. Cassin’s Kingbird
These birds are about a half-foot long and feature a large head. The adult includes a grey head, grey-olive upper body, and yellow lower breast. The Cassin’s Kingbird also has a tail that is “unforked.”
3. Eastern Meadowlark
This is yet another of the western bird species that every birdwatcher in the West region should observe. This is a medium-sized fowl whose throat, chest, and stomach are yellow. Meanwhile, the animal also features a black “V” on its chest. When bird-watching, remember that the Eastern Meadowlark additionally features a short tail whose outer feathers are white.
4. Elf Owl
These birds are the literally “night owls”. The owl has gray-brown feathers, round heads, and light yellow eyes. Meanwhile these birds’ bills are gray with horn-colored ends. The Elf Owl also has what appears to be white “eyebrows.”
5. Snow Goose
This goose is medium-sized and migrates south in large and noisy flocks. Ironically, some of the geese are actually darker than white. Also, when a dark Snow Goose mates with a white Snow goose, the hue of the babies will be dark.
6. Yellow-billed Magpie
This fascinating fowl only lives in the central southern regions of California. The large songbird’s body is black and white. As its name suggests, it also has a bright yellow bill.
