3 Important Bird Facts for Birdwatchers

Birds are simply fascinating. From the gobble of the turkey to the wobble of the penguin, species of birds vary like the colors of the rainbow. Whether you’re an amateur or expert birdwatcher, you can enjoy the variance among birds. Here are some fascinating bird facts that you may not be aware of.

1. There are approximately 10,000 species of birds.
These birds vary like snowflakes in size, shape, and color. Still, some characteristics of birds are common among all species. Firstly, birds lay eggs in order to incubate their babies. While other animals do that action, all birds also have feathers which is a characteristic that no other animals on Earth have. Thirdly, all birds have wings, though some cannot fly. Grounded fowls include kiwis, ostriches, and penguins.

2. Not all nocturnal birds are fully nocturnal.
It may seem logical to assume that nocturnal birds are mostly nocturnal, right?. However, that’s not one of the true bird facts! Some fowls only perform certain tasks at nighttime, such as migrating. Birds that are fully nocturnal include various owl species, such as the Barn Owl, Elf Owl, Great Gray Owl, Great Horned Owl, and Spotted Owl. If you’re an avid birdwatcher, then you’ll need some quality night vision equipment to catch these birds in action.

3. Birds don’t migrate only to stay warm.
While this is the main reason, they also migrate for other crucial purposes. For instance, birds migrate to hunt for food and to find a location for breeding. Vowels typically migrate within the Northern Hemisphere. That’s because the Southern Hemispheres is constantly warm enough to provide a warm environment for hunting and breeding.  Birds in the Northern Hemisphere also need to head south since less sunlight in the autumn provides less time they can spend feeding bugs to their babies.

These are only a few interesting bird facts – there are so much more! Don’t be afraid to discover new things about your winged pals as you go about your birding!
